Andy Robertson will play wherever he is needed for Scotland as long as he gets to pull the shirt on.

Manager Steve Clarke’s team selection for the World Cup qualifier against Denmark saw him put Robertson at right wing-back, but two goals in 15 minutes in Copenhagen ensured it was a difficult night for the visitors.

“The gaffer asked me and I said, ‘yes, no problem’,” skipper Robertson said after the 2-0 loss where right-sided defenders Stephen O’Donnell and Nathan Patterson were unable to make the trip for Covid-19 reasons.

“We were obviously short at right-back so the options were limited.

“The gaffer spoke to me and I didn’t hesitate and I will never hesitate, as long as I am playing for my country then I am happy.

“Of course I think you have seen in the second half I was a wee bit more comfortable on the left, that’s natural but on the right I gave it my best shot, I tried my best but unfortunately in the first half none of us were quite good enough.

“We took too long to settle into the game, me included, and we were all a bit too deep. It is what it is. Right wing-back was new to me but I will never shy away from it.”

Robertson was eventually moved to left-back, with Tierney moving to centre-back, but the damage was done.

“Unfortunately we found ourselves two goals down, the second half you go out and try to get back in the game, you try to stamp your authority on the game, we have done that at times but I felt Denmark were always in control and that was the disappointing thing,” Robertson added.

Defeat left Scotland fourth in Group F, with five points from a possible 12.

Scotland are at home to Moldova on Saturday and then travel to Austria on Tuesday in a crucial tie. “We are still in the group, no question,” Clarke believes.

“We have a tough game against Moldova at the weekend and if we get three points there then we look forward to the Austrian game away. First focus is Saturday – we must get three points.”
