Roy Keane took aim at Andy Robertson and Scotland, saying that they lacked the aggression needed to get anything against Germany.

Scotland suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat against Germany in the opening match of Euro 2024, a result that puts a huge dent in their hopes of advancing into the knockout stage.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side were always clear favourites to get the win in Munich, but it was the easy nature of the win which will be most frustrating for Steve Clarke and the travelling Tartan Army.

Speaking after the game, Scotland captain Robertson spoke about their lack of aggression and how they’ll be angry before focusing on their next fixture, something that Keane took real exception to.

Speaking to ITV Sport, Keane said: “Andy Robertson spoke at the end of the game saying that they had a game plan – it’s all well and good having a plan – he said they weren’t aggressive enough but you have to be aggressive in a game of football.

“You’re playing against an opponent who are much stronger than you, so being aggressive is part of being a footballer.

“I love watching skilful players and the talent that we saw from the German players tonight is great to watch, but my goodness, when you’re playing football at this level you’ve got to hit people.

“Hit them properly, hit them aggressively and in the right way. If you step off against them like Scotland did tonight then it’s no good speaking after the game saying, ‘we had a game plan’ – it’s rubbish.

“Andrew Robertson, its just rubbish coming out. You knew before the game what was at stake so it’s no good after the game going, ‘we regroup and we’ll be angry tomorrow’ – you should be angry for a long time.

“We spoke before the game about creating history, well they’re creating history by playing as badly as that and letting the manager and supporters down.”

Asked about the Ryan Porteous challenge for the penalty before half-time, which put Germany 3-0 up, Keane said: “That wasn’t aggression, that was madness that tackle for the penalty and the sending off – of course.

“You’ve got to do it the right way but being aggressive is part of football. It’s a physical game and they didn’t lay a glove on them.”

Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala put the hosts 2-0 up inside the first 20 minutes before Scotland found themselves a man and another goal down when Porteous was dismissed for his wild challenge on Gundogan and Havertz scored the resulting penalty.

Niclas Fullkrug made it 4-0 midway through the second half before Emre Can made it 5-1 after Scotland got their consolation when Scott McKenna’s header struck Antonio Rudiger in the head and past Manuel Neuer.

Scotland are next in action on Wednesday when they face Switzerland, live on talkSPORT.
