Fans have joked they knew Scotland were ‘in trouble’ against Germany after Kieran Tierney passionately celebrated winning a goal kick.

The Scots suffered a nightmare start to Euro 2024 against the hosts, conceding five goals including one penalty and Ryan Porteous being given a straight red card for his challenge on Ilkay Gundogan.

But it was one moment before the Scots’ net had bulged that had supporters thinking the Tartan Army’s evening in Munich was destined to go wrong.

In the third minute of the tournament’s opening tie, Arsenal defender Tierney won a goal kick after hitting the ball against an on-running Jamal Musiala.

The Scotland fans present cheered loudly as their side kept Musiala at bay, and Tierney bounced off the atmosphere.

He then marched in the direction of the Scotland fans, clenching his fists and bursting with passion.

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson embraced him to congratulate him as he shouted in pride, too.

But unfortunately for Scotland, that joy was short lived, as they found themselves 3-0 down before half-time – and fans haven’t forgotten about Tierney’s premature celebration.

“I did think Scotland were in trouble when Kieran Tierney celebrated winning a goal kick in the 3rd minute,” one wrote on X.

A second said: “Kieran Tierney’s celebration three minutes in hasn’t aged all that well.”

“At least Tierney got to celebrate winning a goal kick in the third minute,” a third quipped.

Ironically, it was Musiala – who played for England at youth level– who doubled Germany’s lead.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz had found the net first, before the ex-Chelsea youngster doubled their lead.

Kai Havertz then converted from the spot to make it 3-0 as Scotland went down to ten men before the break.

Niclas Fullkrug added to Scotland’s woes with a wonderful strike into the top corner in the 68th minute to make it 4-0, with Emre Can netting from distance at the end to make it five.

The Scots did get a consolation before the German’s final goal thanks to an own goal from former Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.
